New York invests millions in psychiatric and cardiac healthcare

New York State is investing significant funding into healthcare infrastructure, focusing on psychiatric emergency services and cardiac care.

The Office of Mental Health is awarding $21 million to establish three new hospital-based Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Programs (CPEPs) and expand four existing ones. These programs provide 24-hour evaluation, crisis outreach, and treatment for mental health conditions and substance-use disorders. Key recipients include the Westchester Medical Center Health Network, which will serve Dutchess and Ulster counties, and Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, serving Clinton, Essex, and Franklin counties. Additionally, Lincoln Medical & Mental Health Center will receive funding for a Bronx-based program.

Separately, a $14 million funding package has been secured to upgrade the cardiac catheterization laboratory at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln in the Bronx. Approximately $9 million of this total comes from state funding, with the remainder provided by city and federal commitments. The new lab will feature specialized imaging and monitoring technology, allowing physicians to treat serious heart emergencies, such as STEMI heart attacks, on-site. This investment aims to reduce the need to transfer critically ill patients to other facilities, providing faster access to lifesaving treatment closer to home.
