New York Issues Summer Safety Guidance Ahead of Memorial Day
New York State officials, through the Division of Consumer Protection, released a comprehensive set of safety reminders for the Memorial Day weekend, marking the unofficial start of summer. The advisory covers heat exposure, proper grill use, playground and playground equipment safety, water activities, and the safe operation of power tools and lawn equipment.
Officials emphasized protecting vulnerable groups: parents are urged never to leave children or pets in vehicles, to supervise kids around pools, lakes and beaches, and to inspect playgrounds before use. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and monitor weather conditions. The guidance also warns about tick and mosquito activity, recommending covering exposed skin and checking for bites after outdoor recreation.
Secretary of State Walter Mosley highlighted that “Memorial Day marks the start of the season when New Yorkers begin planning for large gatherings, outdoor activities and fun festivities,” while Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald warned that “summer fun can quickly turn dangerous when people ignore basic safety precautions.” The advisory encourages the use of grills only in well‑ventilated outdoor areas and advises residents to sign up for NY‑Alert for emergency weather notifications.
