New York Jets waive rookie defensive tackle and evaluate kicker battle

The New York Jets signed defensive tackle Patrick Jenkins on August 5 but released him just 24 hours later after claiming Junior Tafu from the Houston Texans. Jenkins, who entered the league as an undrafted free agent, previously spent time with the Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons and the Columbus Aviators of the United Football League.

In training camp the Jets are also wrestling with a kicker competition. Veteran Jason Sanders missed three of five attempts in Thursday’s session, while rookie Cade York made three of four, missing only a 53‑yard try. Sanders, who has an 84.6 % career field‑goal rate, was released by the Dolphins after a 2025 hip injury and briefly joined the Giants before being cut. Head coach Aaron Glenn commented on the situation and on other young players, emphasizing the team’s focus on readiness for the season opener.
