New York Knicks reshape center rotation with Drummond signing and Valanciunas pursuit
The New York Knicks have overhauled their front‑court after losing Mitchell Robinson and Ariel Hukporti in free agency. They filled the primary vacancy by signing veteran Andre Drummond to a one‑year, $3.9 million contract. Drummond, a 32‑year‑old rebounder who shoots 58.6 % from the free‑throw line in recent seasons, is expected to give Karl‑Anthony Towns rest and provide better shooting range than Robinson, whose free‑throw woes often invited the “Hack‑a‑Mitch” strategy.
In addition, the Knicks retain an opportunity to add another veteran presence by courting Jonas Valanciunas, who became an unrestricted free agent after being waived by Denver. Although no longer the player of his prime, Valanciunas can still contribute solid post play and rebounding off the bench. The team could sign him on a modest veteran‑minimum deal, offering depth behind Drummond and Towns without breaking the Knicks’ self‑imposed second‑apron salary limit.
