New York landmarks illuminated for Suicide Prevention Month

To observe Suicide Prevention Month in September, 16 prominent New York landmarks and bridges have been illuminated in teal and purple. The lighting campaign aims to raise awareness for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Participating sites include One World Trade Center, Niagara Falls, the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, the Kosciuszko Bridge, the Empire State Plaza, and Grand Central Terminal's Pershing Square Viaduct. Other highlighted locations include the Mid-Hudson Bridge and the Walkway Over the Hudson.

The 988 lifeline provides 24/7 access to trained crisis counselors for individuals experiencing mental health crises, emotional distress, or substance-use issues. The service is available across all 62 New York counties. Local organizations, such as Mental Health America of Dutchess County, are also engaging in social media challenges to further spread awareness of the service.
