New York lawmakers propose repeal of gay bathhouse ban

State Assemblymember Tony Simone and State Senator Erik Bottcher introduced legislation to lift the 40‑year ban on adult‑use gay bathhouses in New York. The venues, once a central part of LGBTQ+ culture, were closed in the 1980s amid the AIDS crisis. Simone argued, “We should bring it out of the shadows,” adding that modern public‑health practices make the ban unnecessary. Bottcher echoed that “emergency measures from another era should not become permanent public policy.”

Supporters say legalizing the saunas would revive a historic queer institution and provide regulated spaces for consensual adult activity. Opponents, including Republican Councilwoman Vickie Paladino, contend the facilities are outdated and could pose health risks. The proposal is pending further debate in the New York State Legislature.
