New York Liberty defeat Indiana Fever amid WNBA controversy

The Indiana Fever and New York Liberty faced off in a high-stakes matchup at the Barclays Center, with the Liberty securing a 109-102 victory. The win was bolstered by Leonie Fiebich, playing her first game since July 3, who scored 20 points, and Breanna Stewart, who contributed 22 points. The Fever, led by Kelsey Mitchell's 25 points, Aliyah Boston's 22, and Caitlin Clark's 21, struggled with free-throw consistency during the closing minutes.

The game was preceded by demonstrations outside the arena regarding the WNBA's transgender athlete eligibility debate. Breanna Stewart called for the league to remain a ‘safe space’ for all fans and players amidst the controversy sparked by comments from Fever player Sophie Cunningham.

Following their loss to New York, the Indiana Fever are scheduled to face the Chicago Sky. The Fever are looking to maintain their playoff positioning, while the Sky are attempting to build on a recent three-game winning streak.
