Zohran Mamdani faces criticism over Rikers Island inmate death

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing criticism following his expression of sorrow over the death of Clarence Woodward, an inmate at Rikers Island. Woodward was awaiting trial for the 2024 meat cleaver murder of Jose Miranda, a shop owner in the Bronx.

Mamdani stated on social media that he was “deeply saddened” by the death of a “New Yorker in City custody” and expressed thoughts for Woodward’s family while reiterating his goal to close Rikers Island. The Mayor’s comments have drawn backlash from the victim’s family, who expressed outrage that he did not acknowledge the murder or the victim. Marisol, the victim’s mother, described the Mayor’s response as “not fair.”

Woodward, who had a significant criminal record, was found dead in his cell on a Tuesday morning. While the Mayor’s office noted the cause of death was unknown, critics have pointed to the incident as a distraction from management issues at Rikers Island. Reports indicate that while many inmate deaths are attributed to medical issues, suicides, and overdoses, the facility continues to face scrutiny from federal monitors regarding supervision and staff oversight.
