New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani Faces Lawsuit Over City‑Run Grocery Store Plan

Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City has announced a proposal to open five taxpayer‑funded grocery stores that would sell food at prices up to 30 percent below market rates. The plan includes a first store in Hunts Point slated for late 2027 and a second at East Harlem’s La Marqueta scheduled for 2029, the mayor’s re‑election year.

The Multicultural Business Coalition, a group of immigrant‑owned small‑business owners chaired by Frank Garcia, voted to sue the city unless the mayor meets with them within three weeks. Coalition members say the government‑run stores threaten independent bodegas and other small retailers already struggling with rising costs. Garcia told Fox News Digital, “We’re nonpartisan. So we’re going to meet everybody, Republican or Democrat.” Critics also warn that the long rollout timeline could allow the project to fail before voters can assess its impact.
