New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani pushes socialist policies and meets Mario Balotelli

Zohran Mamdani, a 34‑year‑old activist born in Uganda to an Indian‑Muslim family, was sworn in as New York City’s 112th mayor in early 2026, becoming the first democratic socialist to hold the office. The mayor referenced Balotelli’s iconic “Why always me?” shirt from 2011 and recalled a charity match they played together at Gracie Mansion. Mamdani also quoted the striker’s comment, “When I score I don’t celebrate, because I’m just doing my job,” highlighting his engagement with popular culture and social‑media audiences.
