New York midterm races focus on AI and data center regulation

Artificial intelligence and data center development have emerged as central issues in New York’s upcoming midterm elections. Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul has implemented a one-year statewide moratorium on new data center sites, citing public anxiety regarding noise pollution, water supply depletion, and rising utility bills.

Republican candidates are utilizing a pro-technology and pro-business platform to counter Democratic efforts. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, the Republican nominee for governor, has criticized the moratorium. Meanwhile, in congressional races, Democrat Cait Conley is campaigning against incumbent Republican Rep. Mike Lawler by calling for tighter oversight of corporate development to prevent communities from bearing excessive costs.

Public sentiment appears cautious regarding the technology. A Siena University poll indicates that only 29% of likely New York voters view AI favorably, while 52% hold an unfavorable opinion. Opposition is particularly strong among voters aged 18 to 35, where 71% view the technology unfavorably.
