New York municipalities debate gas-powered leaf blower bans
Local governments in New York are debating restrictions on gas-powered leaf blowers to address noise, air quality, and environmental concerns.
The Peekskill Common Council is considering a local law that would ban gas-powered leaf blowers during the summer months of June, July, and August. While electric blowers would be permitted, the city and school districts would be exempt. Some council members have expressed concern regarding the impact on small businesses, while others support the ban to reduce noise and promote better lawn care practices.
In Huntington, the Town Board recently rejected a proposal to restrict gas-powered leaf blowers. The failed measure sought to classify their use as a noise disturbance violation during certain times of the year, including summer months, Sundays, and holidays. While proponents, including representatives from the American Academy of Pediatrics, argued for the ban to protect public health, Town Supervisor Ed Smyth characterized the measure as government overreach. Officials in Huntington indicated they are seeking a compromise for next year.
