New York offers ammunition rebates for deer hunters

New York hunters can participate in a rebate program offering up to $60 for switching to certified lead-free ammunition during the 2026-27 hunting season. Supported by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the initiative aims to reduce lead ingestion by scavengers, such as eagles, by encouraging the use of non-lead bullets and slugs. There are 10,000 rebates available statewide, and participants must submit receipts and a hunting license to qualify.

To hunt deer in New York, individuals must first complete a required hunter education course through the state. Licenses vary by residency and age, with annual licenses for residents aged 16-69 costing $22. Hunters must also obtain specific permits for activities such as turkey hunting or muzzleloading. Notably, as of 2025, crossbows may be used during the same seasons and locations as vertical bows for deer and bear.
