New York offers child tax credits and summer food assistance
New York families are eligible for various financial assistance programs, including the Empire State Child Credit and the Summer EBT program.
Under the Empire State Child Credit, families can receive up to $1,000 per child under the age of four and up to $500 for children aged four to 16. These benefits are claimed during tax filing and can be issued as a refund even for those without state tax liabilities. Eligibility requires residency in New York for the entire tax year and a valid Social Security number or ITIN for the claimant and the child. Income limits apply, with thresholds set at $110,000 for married couples filing jointly, $75,000 for single filers, and $55,000 for married couples filing separately.
Additionally, the Summer EBT program provides $120 per eligible child to assist with food purchases during the school summer season. These funds are distributed via EBT cards and must be used within 112 days of receipt. For example, funds received in mid-June expire in mid-October. Unused funds will expire without the possibility of a claim.
