New York official proposes $70 million government-run grocery store initiative

New York official Zohran Mamdani has announced plans to launch five government-run grocery stores across New York, a project intended to cost over $70 million in taxpayer funds. The initiative aims to provide a 30% discount on all groceries.

To prevent non-residents from purchasing inventory for resale elsewhere, Mamdani proposed implementing a “library-esque” ID card system. This identification would be restricted to New York citizens to ensure the benefits remain within the state.
