New York officials arrest 16 in auto-insurance fraud crackdown
New York officials, including Governor Kathy Hochul, the State Police, and the Department of Financial Services, have announced the arrest of 16 individuals in a crackdown on auto-insurance fraud. The enforcement action spans eight counties, including the Bronx, Kings, Suffolk, Erie, Monroe, Queens, Onondaga, and Richmond.
Investigators allege the cases involve more than a dozen instances of fraudulent activity, including staged crashes, false records, and inflated claims, totaling nearly $500,000. Among those charged is 23-year-old Tazeona Silas of Rochester, who is accused of identity theft and fourth-degree insurance fraud for allegedly using another person's identity to obtain coverage and submit a claim.
Authorities filed 29 felony charges and two misdemeanor charges in connection with the arrests. The crackdown follows reports of a significant rise in suspected motor-vehicle fraud; state officials noted that insurance companies reported 43,811 suspected incidents in 2025, an 80 percent increase over five years. Governor Hochul has identified insurance fraud as a primary driver of high car insurance premiums in the state.
