New York officials attend Devorah Halberstam’s annual Sukkah celebration
New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and several other high-ranking state and city officials attended an annual Sukkah celebration hosted by Crown Heights activist Devorah Halberstam.
Attendees included Attorney General Letitia James, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, and Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, among other community and law enforcement leaders. During the gathering, Mayor Mamdani was presented with a mezuzah, intended as a blessing for the protection of all New Yorkers.
The presentation of the mezuzah to a non-Jewish official has prompted discussions regarding Jewish law (halacha). Historical rulings, such as those by the Maharil and the Rema, have traditionally addressed whether giving a mezuzah to a non-Jewish political figure is permitted, with some authorities suggesting it could diminish the object's sanctity.
