New York Police increase security following sewer incidents

The New York Police Department (NYPD) has increased security measures during the 81st United Nations General Assembly following a series of unusual incidents involving individuals emerging from the city's sewer system.

On Wednesday, three people were observed climbing out of a manhole in the Upper East Side, an area housing several world leaders. Two of these individuals were arrested on Friday for trespassing. The suspects claimed they were searching for valuables washed into the sewers by recent storms.

Authorities have recorded at least six such incidents since May, including sightings in Queens and near Penn Station. While these events have revived local legends regarding a community of people living in the tunnels, police suggest the primary motive may be the search for lost items. Officials have warned the public that entering the sewer system is extremely dangerous due to toxic gases, unstable terrain, and the risk of sudden flooding.
