The New York Post ran a July 26 cover story claiming that thousands of 9/11 families had signed a petition to prevent New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani from attending the 25th‑anniversary ceremony at Ground Zero. The print edition said the petition had collected 3,515 signatures, most from victims’ families, while the online version reported over 1,100 signatures and at least 300 families. Organizer Giovanni Galante told Popular Information that neither figure was verified and that the group had no list of signatories. The Post later edited the story, inflating the estimate to between 3,500 and 7,000 signatures and assigning reporters to locate additional families. A coalition representing 250 families of 9/11 victims issued a statement supporting Mamdani’s attendance and said, “We strongly condemn the anti‑American accusations and Islamophobic sentiment underlying the effort seeking to prevent him from being at Ground Zero.” The Post dismissed the coalition as “funded by George Soros” and has not commented further.
