New York retirement systems report high returns and significant pension payouts

New York retirement systems reported significant financial activity for the 2026 fiscal year. New York City Comptroller Mark Levine and trustees of five city retirement systems announced an aggregate 13% investment return, significantly exceeding the 7.0% actuarial target. The combined value of these systems has reached $326.3 billion, a performance expected to reduce City pension obligations by approximately $6.3 billion over five fiscal years starting in FY28.

Separately, data from the New York State and Local Retirement System (NYSLRS) shows that 132 retirees are eligible to collect pensions exceeding $200,000 in fiscal year 2026. These individuals include police officers, doctors, and government administrators. The highest eligible pension is held by Kara Bennorth, a former communications executive, at $503,128. The total pension obligation for the state’s 485,775 pensioners was $16.2 billion for fiscal year 2025, a 20% increase since 2021.
