New York schools implement new cell phone and instruction policies

New York families face several policy changes for the upcoming school year. A statewide bell-to-bell cell phone ban is now being strictly enforced, with students required to keep devices away from the first to the last bell. If a device is confiscated, a parent or guardian must pick it up in person from the school office.

In New York City, Election Day will no longer be a day off for students; instead, it is transitioning to a remote instruction day to allow school buildings to serve as polling sites without losing instructional time. Additionally, all public school students in New York are entitled to free breakfast regardless of household income, and many districts are also providing free lunch.

Due to the state requirement of 180 days of instruction, school calendars are becoming increasingly crowded. This pressure, combined with the addition of new cultural holidays, is contributing to the shift toward remote instruction days to maintain required academic time.
