New York socialist surge reshapes Democratic primaries and boosts Working Families Party

Socialist candidates have won several Democratic primaries in New York, including Brad Lander, Daliaza Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez, backed by the city’s socialist mayor Zoran Mamdani. Their victories are being described as a "seismic" shift that challenges the Democratic establishment and signals growing acceptance of left‑wing policies among voters.

The Working Families Party (WFP), led by state director Jasmine Gripper, has played a central role in this trend. Gripper highlighted the party’s historic efforts to elect progressive office‑holders such as Letitia James, Jumaane Williams and Jamaal Bowman, and noted that the WFP helped secure a Democratic trifecta in New York.
