New York State FY2026-27 Budget Adds Billions for Schools, Health, Infrastructure

The New York State Senate and Assembly approved the FY2026‑27 budget, earmarking billions of dollars for education, health care, infrastructure and environmental programs.

Education allocations include $592.7 million in aid for 19 school districts in the state’s SD40 region, a $22.4 million boost for universal pre‑K, a $1.6 billion increase in statewide universal pre‑K funding and $471.4 million in additional school aid for the 119th Assembly district, representing a 4.33 % rise over the previous year.

Health and mental‑health provisions provide $500 million for financially distressed hospitals, $240 million for nursing homes, $1.27 billion for community mental‑health residential programs, $500 million for adult mental‑health services and $3 million for veteran suicide‑prevention initiatives.

Infrastructure spending features $698 million for the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS), $525 million for lead removal, $750 million for clean‑water projects, $250 million for clean‑water funding and $1 billion from the Sustainable Futures program for weatherization and clean‑energy projects, including $200 million for the NY‑Sun solar initiative.

The budget also extends a middle‑class tax cut—the lowest in 70 years—introduces utility‑rate reforms and benchmarks utility executive salaries to affordability goals.
