New York State grants $1.2 billion for affordable and supportive housing

Governor Kathy Hochul’s $25 billion five‑year housing plan allocated more than $1 billion in bonds and subsidies to 12 projects across New York State, plus a $21.6 million grant to renovate the Narragansett supportive‑housing building on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The combined funding exceeds $1.2 billion and is aimed at creating or preserving 2,754 affordable apartments, many for households earning up to 80 % of the area‑median income and a sizable share for residents below 60 %.

Projects include the Narragansett’s 104 units (78 with supportive services), the Chelsea Beacon conversion of a former correctional facility (up to 131 units, 79 supportive), Vital Brooklyn’s Kingsbrook Estates in East Flatbush (402 units) and Alafia Phase 3 (273 units), as well of new builds and rehabilitations in Harlem, the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn. Funding comes from New York State Homes and Community Renewal, the NY RUSH program, Empire State Development and the Office of Mental Health, and targets vulnerable New Yorkers such as medically fragile tenants, veterans and seniors.
