New York State Hits Solar Power Record, Supplying 1.3 Million Homes

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that New York has reached eight gigawatts of distributed solar capacity, enough to power more than 1.3 million homes and businesses. The achievement puts the state ahead of its 2030 target of 10 GW and marks a major milestone in the U.S. clean‑energy transition.

The expansion has attracted roughly $12.2 billion in private investment and created over 16 000 jobs in installation, operation and maintenance. The growth is driven by the NY‑Sun program, which supports rooftop, community and commercial solar projects across the state.
