New York State issues hunting guidance to prevent chronic wasting disease

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has issued guidance for the upcoming 2026-2027 whitetail deer hunting season. To help prevent the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD), the DEC is strongly urging hunters to use synthetic attractant scents rather than natural deer urine products, although natural scents remain legal in the state.

Additionally, hunters are advised to review updated state regulations designed to manage deer populations and maintain healthy herd balances. The hunting season is scheduled to begin on October 1.
