New York State Police seize 500 lb of cannabis after high‑speed highway chase

State troopers in Upstate New York ended a high‑speed pursuit on July 16 after the driver of a vehicle traveling southbound on Interstate 87 failed to stop for a traffic violation. The chase moved through Warren and Saratoga counties, with the suspect driving the wrong way on the Northway, attempting to ram police vehicles and exiting at multiple exits.

During the pursuit the passenger threw garbage bags containing vacuum‑sealed cannabis onto the highway. Troopers recovered more than 500 pounds of marijuana and arrested both occupants at a median on the highway. The driver, 39‑year‑old Torrey R. Jackson of Massena, faces felony charges including attempted aggravated assault on a police officer, criminal possession of cannabis, assault, criminal mischief and several others. Several State Police vehicles were damaged in the incident.

The seizure represents a substantial drug bust in the region and underscores the risks of reckless driving during law‑enforcement pursuits.
