New York state tax revenues exceed projections amid AI market concerns

New York State is experiencing significant tax revenue growth, though officials warn of potential volatility linked to the artificial intelligence sector. State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli reported that tax receipts totaled $68.5 billion through the middle of State Fiscal Year 2027, exceeding Division of the Budget estimates by $7.3 billion. This surge is attributed largely to financial market growth, with personal income tax and business tax collections showing substantial increases.

Despite the current surplus, Budget Director Blake Washington cautioned state agency heads that the state’s economic outlook could be threatened if an AI-driven market bubble bursts. Washington noted that while tax receipts have been buoyed by stock market upticks fueled by AI investment, a slowdown in this sector could lead to a cooling of equities and an outsized negative impact on state revenues.
