New York State to overhaul unemployment insurance system

The New York State Department of Labor is transitioning to a new $188 million cloud-based unemployment insurance system to replace a 50-year-old infrastructure. The transition is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on November 2, 2026.

During the overhaul, which is expected to last between 9 and 12 days, all online and phone-based unemployment services, including applications and weekly benefit renewals, will be temporarily unavailable. This outage will affect more than 100,000 New Yorkers currently enrolled in benefits, many of whom may miss one or more payments. Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon stated that customers will receive retroactive checks in a single payment once the new system is live.

The upgrade aims to modernize the claims process, improve mobile accessibility, provide real-time claim status, and strengthen protections against fraud. The state has faced significant challenges with its previous system, including a massive surge in hotline calls during the pandemic and billions of dollars lost to fraud according to a state audit.
