New York State urges beachgoers to stay shark‑smart amid rising sightings

Authorities in New York have warned that a seasonal migration of sharks along the U.S. East Coast is expected to continue from June through September. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) issued new “Shark Smart” guidelines, urging swimmers to avoid areas near seals, fish schools, murky water, and to stay away from the water at dawn, dusk or night. Visitors are advised to swim in groups, keep close to shore and follow instructions from lifeguards and park staff.

To improve monitoring, the governor’s office announced the deployment of 46 drones on Long Island, with 67 certified pilots ready to scout for sharks and large fish schools that could attract them. Officials stress that the increased sightings are part of a normal marine ecosystem and do not indicate heightened aggression toward humans.
