New York Times Book Review ranks best books of the 21st century

The New York Times Book Review has released a ranking of the 100 best books of the 21st century, compiled from feedback provided by 503 literary figures, including authors, editors, and critics. Elena Ferrante’s ‘My Brilliant Friend’ was named the top book on the list.

While the ranking serves as a snapshot of contemporary literary achievements, it has faced criticism for being US-centric and favoring established, successful authors over literary outsiders.

In a specific subset of the list focusing on the 50 best thrillers, many titles have successfully transitioned to film and television. Notable examples include Gillian Flynn’s ‘Gone Girl’, directed by David Fincher; Dennis Lehane’s ‘Mystic River’, directed by Clint Eastwood; Stieg Larsson’s ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’; and Cormac McCarthy’s ‘No Country for Old Men’, directed by the Coen brothers.
