Jonathan McKinsey, NYT executive, fatally shot in California

Jonathan McKinsey, a 40-year-old engineering director for The New York Times, was fatally shot in a parking lot at the Dublin Sports Grounds in Dublin, California. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots before finding McKinsey with severe wounds to his head and chest.

Police arrested McKinsey’s in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, shortly after the incident. The couple remained near the scene and were apprehended by a passing officer. They face multiple charges, including first-degree murder, felony conspiracy, willful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, and child endangerment. They are currently being held at the Santa Rita jail.

Court documents reveal a history of intense family conflict. McKinsey’s wife, Candice Jang, had filed for divorce in 2025 and sought restraining orders, alleging domestic violence and child abuse. Conversely, McKinsey had also filed for divorce and sought protection, alleging Jang had used anti-LGBTQ+ slurs against him during his gender transition. Investigators are examining these ongoing custody and domestic disputes as a potential motive for the shooting.
