New York Times executive killed in California shooting

Jonathan McKinsey, a games engineering executive for The New York Times, was fatally shot in a parking lot at the Dublin Sports Grounds in California. Police have arrested his in-laws, 77-year-old Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, on suspicion of murder and conspiracy to commit a crime. Witnesses reported that the couple allegedly took turns shooting McKinsey.

At the time of the incident, McKinsey was involved in a contentious child custody battle with his estranged wife, Candice Jang. Court records indicate that both parties had accused the other of abuse. McKinsey had been seeking admission to a mental health diversion program regarding misdemeanor charges involving child cruelty, to which he had pleaded not guilty.

According to court documents and restraining orders, tensions between McKinsey and his in-laws reportedly stemmed from disagreements regarding his children. Specifically, records suggest Chen had expressed hostility toward her grandson over his interest in wearing his sister’s clothing, an issue McKinsey had previously raised in legal filings.
