New York Times expands daily puzzle lineup with Strands and Connections

The New York Times released several daily word‑puzzle games in late June 2026. On June 23 the Strands puzzle featured a “A whole new world” theme centered on the sandbox game Minecraft, with answers such as Food, Storage, Building, Tool, Armor, Block, Portal and a spangram that spelled “Minecraft.” The June 21 Strands edition used the theme “That’s included!” and provided answers like BREAKFAST, FRIDGE, INTERNET, LAUNDRY and SAFE, with the spangram HOTEL AMENITIES.

The same period saw two Connections puzzles. The standard Connections game on June 21 grouped 16 words into categories ranging from weather terms to NBC sitcoms, with answers such as DRIZZLE, RAIN, SHOWER, SPRINKLE (weather) and COMMUNITY, FRIENDS, SCRUBS, SWINGS (sitcom). A sports‑focused Connections edition on June 23 offered groups like AL Central baseball teams, deflection verbs, Big Ten football stadiums and words ending in a silent “T.” All games are free to play online and attract a large daily audience.

These puzzles illustrate the NYT’s strategy of expanding interactive content beyond traditional news reporting.
