New York to cover 75% of SNAP costs as federal funding drops
A significant restructuring of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding model took effect today, shifting a larger portion of administrative costs from the federal government to individual states. Under the new rules, federal support for administrative costs has been reduced from 50 percent to 25 percent, while state responsibility has increased from 50 percent to 75 percent.
In New York, the state will now absorb 75 percent of the program's costs. While the shift changes the fiscal burden on state and local budgets, monthly benefit amounts for program participants remain unchanged, and the amount of money delivered to electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards will stay steady.
Experts note that this represents one of the most significant restructurings in the program's 50-year history. While direct aid is protected for now, advocates warn that the increased fiscal weight on state authorities could lead to administrative strain on local agencies. Additionally, future changes slated for 2027 may require states to contribute toward SNAP benefits themselves based on error rates.
