New York unemployment benefits can reach $869 per week

Unemployed workers in New York State can apply for unemployment insurance benefits of up to $869 per week. The maximum weekly amount was increased from $504 to $869 in October 2025, following the settlement of a nearly $7 billion federal loan related to the state's unemployment insurance fund.

Individual benefit amounts are not guaranteed and depend on the worker's previous wages during a base period. Benefits can be extended for a maximum of 26 weeks to assist with costs such as rent and food while individuals seek new employment.

To qualify, workers must generally have lost their jobs through no fault of their own, have sufficient previous earnings, be ready and available to work immediately, and actively seek employment. Applicants must certify their unemployment status every week to maintain eligibility. The New York State Department of Labor notes that initial payments may take between three and six weeks to process while eligibility is determined.
