New York veterans receive property tax exemptions
New York State offers several property tax exemptions for veterans, including the Alternative Veterans Exemption, the Cold War Veterans Exemption, and the Eligible Funds Exemption. A new provision, established by Chapter 672 of the Laws of 2025, provides a 100% exemption for certain totally disabled veterans. These exemptions function by reducing the assessed value of a home rather than the tax rate itself.
Because local governments determine whether to adopt these exemptions and can set their own benefit limits, implementation varies by municipality. In Saratoga County, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a full property tax exemption on the county portion of taxes for wartime veterans with a 100% Permanent and Total Disability Compensation rating or a Total Disability due to Unemployability designation from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This specific local exemption is scheduled to be applied to 2028 taxes.
