New York woman found not responsible for child killings due to postpartum psychosis

A New York City woman, Dimone Fleming, has been found not responsible by reason of mental disease or defect for the 2022 killings of her two young sons. Psychiatric experts for both the prosecution and defense determined that Fleming stabbed her children, aged 3 years and 11 months, as a result of postpartum psychosis.

Following the ruling by Judge Audrey Stone, Fleming will avoid prison and instead face potential hospitalization. Depending on future psychiatric evaluations, she could be committed to a high-security hospital indefinitely if deemed dangerous, or sent to a less restrictive facility if deemed mentally ill but not dangerous. If found mentally fit, she could be discharged.

The verdict has drawn comparisons to the ongoing legal proceedings involving Lindsay Clancy, whose defense team also cites postpartum-related mental health issues.
