New York Yacht Club hosts inaugural Women’s International Championship
The inaugural New York Yacht Club Women’s International Championship in Newport, Rhode Island, has concluded, prompting organizers to commit to a biennial event starting in 2028. The regatta featured a 20-team international fleet competing in identical 37-foot IC37 keelboats. A United States crew, skippered by Megan Grapengeter-Rudnick, secured the victory.
Among the notable participants, the Australian team Shaw and Partners Women Racing, led by co-founders Katie Spithill and Stacey Jackson, finished fifth overall. This result marked the highest placement for a team from outside North America during their first international campaign. Despite a difficult second day, the Australian crew recorded strong performances in the final races, including back-to-back second-place finishes in Races 5 and 6.
NYYC Commodore Clare Harrington noted the high quality of the 200 sailors involved, which included Olympians and America’s Cup sailors. The event was supported by sponsors such as Rolex, Helly Hansen, and State Street Investment Management. The championship utilized a specialized trophy manufactured by Tiffany in Rhode Island.
