New York Yankees claim reliever John Schreiber off waivers

The New York Yankees have claimed right-handed reliever John Schreiber off waivers from the Kansas City Royals. The 32-year-old sidearmer has recorded a 3.65 ERA in 55 appearances this season, though advanced metrics such as a 4.87 FIP suggest his recent performance may be slightly inflated by luck.

The move allows the Yankees to bolster their pitching staff for the postseason stretch, particularly following injuries to Fernando Cruz and Ryan Weatherby. Because the active roster expands from 26 to 28 players shortly, the Yankees likely will not need to make a corresponding roster move to accommodate the claim.

For the Royals, the move provides a salary savings of approximately $600,000. As a team currently out of contention, the Royals placed Schreiber on waivers to potentially shed contract costs before he becomes a free agent at the end of the season.
