New York Yankees Demote Shortstop Anthony Volpe to Triple‑A

The New York Yankees sent three highly touted prospects—right‑hander Angel Chivilli, outfielder Jasson Domínguez, and shortstop Anthony Volpe—to their Triple‑A affiliate in Scranton/Wilkes‑Barre after the trade‑deadline deadline. The moves clear roster space for recent acquisitions Luis Garcia Jr., an infielder from Washington, and outfielder Heliot Ramos from San Francisco. Volpe, a 2023 Gold Glove winner, struggled this season, batting .240 with one home run and committing four errors in 56 games, prompting the club to option him to the minors where he will split time between shortstop and second base. The Yankees are chasing the AL East title, trailing the Tampa Bay Rays by three and a half games, and hope the roster shuffle improves their chances.

The demotions also included Chivilli, who had allowed seven runs in five appearances, and Domínguez, whose .230 slash line and declining power numbers made him expendable after the addition of Ramos. The Yankees also called up top prospect George Lombard Jr., a shortstop who debuted with a solo home run, as they re‑tool their infield for the stretch run.
