CC Sabathia honored by Yankees with number 52 retirement

The New York Yankees held a ceremony at Yankee Stadium to retire CC Sabathia’s number 52 and induct him into Monument Park. Sabathia, a key figure in the team’s 2009 World Series championship, became the 24th player or manager in franchise history to receive these honors. During the event, Sabathia expressed that the recognition felt more significant than his Hall of Fame induction because of the effort required to win over the New York fanbase during his 11-season tenure.

The ceremony included a moment of tension when Yankees general manager Brian Cashman entered the field to present Sabathia with a commemorative ring and blazer, drawing loud boos from sections of the crowd.

On the roster front, the Yankees face injury challenges heading into the postseason. Reliever Clarke Schmidt has been placed on the 15-day injured list with bicep neuritis, likely sidelining him for the Wild Card Series. Additionally, pitcher Brendan Beck was optioned to the FCL Yankees following a single appearance where he allowed seven earned runs. To address roster needs, the team has called up Bradley Hanner and signed Alexander Cornielle.
