New York Yankees place Ryan McMahon on 10-day injured list

The New York Yankees have placed third baseman Ryan McMahon on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to August 20, following a Grade 2 left thumb sprain. The injury occurred during a game against the Baltimore Orioles when McMahon jammed his thumb while sliding into second base. McMahon indicated that while the news is disappointing, he is thankful that surgery likely will not be necessary and expects to miss only the minimum amount of time.

To fill the roster vacancy, the Yankees recalled Max Schuemann from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Other options for the third base position include Jose Caballero and Amed Rosario. The team is also awaiting the potential return of Cody Bellinger, who is nearing activation following a rehab assignment for a hamstring strain.

In other roster news, manager Aaron Boone noted that catcher Mitch Garver is working on his defensive skills in the minor leagues, but a major league call-up is not imminent. Additionally, pitcher Max Fried is scheduled for a side session as he nears eligibility to return from the injured list.
