New York's Hotel Plaza to close in 2027 for historic facade restoration
The iconic Hotel Plaza in New York City will close its doors in January 2027 to undergo extensive restoration of its historic, protected facade. Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, the property's operator, announced that the closure is expected to last at least four years, with a potential reopening in 2031.
Located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, the French Renaissance-style building has been a New York City landmark since 1969. The restoration is necessitated by the complexity of preserving the monument and addressing unsafe conditions previously identified by the city's Department of Buildings. The project will impact the hotel's 282 rooms, 181 apartments, the Palm Court, and various event spaces.
While the exact cost of the works has not been disclosed, the hotel's labor union confirmed that its 378 members will have the right to return to their positions with their current salaries once operations resume. The hotel is widely recognized for its cultural significance and its appearances in films such as ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York’ and ‘North by Northwest’.
