New youth mental health service launched in Central Otago

New Zealand has officially launched Hono ki te Ora, a mental health and addiction service specifically designed for children and youth in the Central Otago and Queenstown Lakes regions. The service targets individuals aged 5 to 24 and aims to provide a single point of connection to prevent families from having to navigate fragmented systems.

Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey stated the service follows a “no wrong door” approach to ensure users do not have to repeat their stories across multiple providers. The initiative intends to work alongside existing health, education, and community organizations to improve coordination rather than duplicating services.

The region was prioritized due to its status as one of New Zealand's fastest-growing areas and its geographic isolation, noting that many residents live over two hours from a major hospital. Since accepting referrals in May, the service has received 80 referrals, with 35 young people currently receiving active support.
