New Zealand achieves training goal for 10,000 family and sexual violence frontline staff

The New Zealand Government announced that 10,000 frontline workers have been trained in family and sexual violence prevention within the past 18 months, meeting the target six months ahead of schedule. Minister for the Prevention of Family and Sexual Violence Karen Chhour said the milestone reflects the multi‑agency effort behind the second Te Aorerekura Action Plan.

Training has been delivered to staff across NZ Police, Oranga Tamariki (Ministry for Children), the Department of Corrections, the Ministry of Justice and ACC. The Ministry of Justice has trained over 800 court‑related workers, Corrections more than 4,700 staff, and Police redesigned its recruit curriculum to include two weeks of family‑violence training, with 550 recruits trained in 2024 and an expected 850 by the end of 2026. The program aligns with the family‑violence workforce capability frameworks and aims to improve recognition, response and referral for victims and survivors.
