New Zealand adds tourism and hospitality subjects to secondary schools

The New Zealand government announced nine new industry‑led subjects for Years 12‑13, to be piloted in 2028 and rolled out nationally in 2029. Among them are tourism, hospitality, food and beverage and an infrastructure subject, all developed with the Services Industry Skills Boards and teachers.

Tourism Industry Aotearoa chief executive Rebecca Ingram said the inclusion of tourism recognises the sector’s future importance and will showcase a wide range of career pathways, from entrepreneurship to destination management. Hospitality New Zealand chief executive Kristy Phillips welcomed the hospitality and food‑and‑beverage subjects, noting they will strengthen vocational routes and give students real‑world skills.

Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis highlighted the reforms as a way to create good jobs and higher wages for young New Zealanders. The announcement also confirmed the opening date of Auckland’s City Rail Link on 13 September 2024, linking the new infrastructure subject to a major national transport project.
