New Zealand receives advisory report on aged care reform

The New Zealand Government has received a comprehensive report from the Ministerial Advisory Group (MAG) regarding the future of the nation’s aged care system. The report, titled ‘A place to grow old, securing the future of aged care,’ provides 40 recommendations aimed at creating a more integrated and sustainable system to address the challenges of an aging population.

Key recommendations include increasing access to home-based care, streamlining assessments, and reforming the current funding model. Associate Health Minister Casey Costello noted that the existing funding model is outdated and siloed. The Ministry of Health has been directed to develop advice for the Government based on these findings.

While advocacy groups like Grey Power New Zealand have welcomed the vision for improved home-based care and workforce support, they have expressed concerns regarding financial implications. Specifically, they warned against recommendations that might increase the financial burden on older citizens, such as lowering asset thresholds for residential care contributions. Additionally, the Health and Disability Commissioner emphasized that any reform must prioritize safety, rights, and person-centered care to protect vulnerable individuals.
