New Zealand AI Trust Report Flags Sustainability and Digital Sovereignty Risks

The One New Zealand AI Trust Report 2026: Sustainability Edition was released on 29 July 2026. The survey found that 45 % of New Zealanders are concerned about the environmental impacts of AI, a figure that rises to 63 % among 18‑24‑year‑olds. The biggest sustainability worries relate to electricity use (66 %), water consumption (51 %), electronic waste (50 %) and carbon emissions (44 %). Respondents also cited job loss (65 %), reduced human interaction in customer service (62 %) and over‑reliance on AI without human oversight (60 %) as major concerns, while 59 % remain wary of privacy breaches. Nicky Preston, Head of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability at One NZ, said, “Trust has always been fundamental to technology adoption, and sustainability considerations are part of the trust equation.”

Separately, University of Auckland Professor Gehan Gunasekara warned that New Zealand’s growing reliance on overseas‑owned cloud platforms for AI services creates economic, strategic and national‑security risks. He urged stronger digital‑resilience measures and a national strategy to govern AI data centres, noting the Green Party’s proposal for a one‑year pause on consenting new AI data‑centre projects while environmental and sovereignty impacts are assessed. The government is simultaneously promoting AI investment, highlighting the country’s renewable energy resources and political stability.
