New Zealand airports undergo major infrastructure upgrades

New Zealand is executing a nationwide transformation of its aviation infrastructure to improve connectivity and operational efficiency. Auckland Airport is leading a NZ$3.9 billion program, including domestic jet and international terminal improvements, scheduled for completion by late 2029.

Other significant projects include a terminal rebuild at Palmerston North Airport aimed for a 2027 opening, and terminal expansions at Queenstown Airport to meet rising passenger demand. Queenstown Airport also recently received the ‘community engagement award’ at the 2026 New Zealand Airports Association Awards for its ‘He Pae Tata, He Pae Tawhiti’ initiative. This program establishes an enduring partnership with mana whenua to integrate Kāi Tahu values and cultural narratives into the airport’s future planning and design.

Additional modernization efforts are underway at Christchurch, Dunedin, Wellington, and Nelson airports, focusing on passenger facilities, baggage systems, and cultural improvements.
